Over the weekend an alleged screen shot from the soon to be announced Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch is concerning fans of the series. The image appears to show a very similar game that is already on the 3DS currently and leaves little graphical improvement over the current titles. This screen shot is not verified and many are skeptical, but it bring up the question: would fans be disappointed if it were true? PAX East line ups are set and Nintendo sent their current line up out to attendees showing a long list of games to check out.

God I hope that leak is fake…

Marshmallow M80 April 8, 2018 at 8:22 pm

I’ve been playing pokemon for 16 years, and I can say that I don’t want huge changes because thinking critically, I don’t think a real-time battle system would work out for what has become the biggest draw for a lot of fans: the competitive battling. It’s clear that Gamefreak also thinks that is a huge draw to the games, seeing as they’ve been cutting a lot of the post game in newer entries, while making it easier and easier to breed for perfect iv pokemon.

The biggest worry I have about the real-time battle system is that the battling would devolve to dodging constantly, and using special attackers that can hit their foes from a distance so it’s easier to dodge, or using stuff like earthquake. Even if they have it so there is short range on these moves, it would feel untrue to the world they’re trying to show the player. Balancing over 700 moves would be extremely difficult, and balancing the stats of 840+ pokemon (including different forms that would affect stats), plus however many pokemon they would add would be absolutely insane to do, and to do well. Speed may be difficult to translate properly from turn-based where it decides who goes first to how quickly they would physically move in the games (Making some really good pokemon absolutely horrible in the process).

Plus, people have put hundreds to thousands of hours into breeding competitive pokemon, and risking so many of those pokemon to become horrible and not viable at all would really piss players off. If they give the option for both that would be great, but I feel that’s way too much to expect from Gamefreak.

I think the jump between Gen 7 and 8 is going to be similar to the jump between Gen 5 and 6. With generation 6 we got a lot more objects and fidelity on screen, but it didn’t really fundamentally change how we play (X&Y had more 3D sensery than Black&White, but both had 3D senery) as opposed to what we got with gen 7 which took full advantage of the 3DS system (which really shows you how limited the system is). Generation 8 is still going to have improvments and changes that are going to be welcome, but it’s not going to be “Pokemon of the wild” or “Pokemon odyssey”.

I also think it’s likely that they’ll experiment with cities and for example have cities with free camera movment. The reason I think this is because cities are usually always the places in Pokemon that get the most experimental features first. I think the reason cities get features first is beacuse cities do well in promotional material.

I hope it’s not pretty much a high resolution 3DS port… Not a fan of the turn-based combat and encounter system as I’ve grown older and honestly haven’t finished a game in years. Nothing against Pokémon though, pretty much my childhood! it’d just be cool to see something new.

I was actually talking about this just the other day with a friend of mine. I recently got back into Pokemon kinda with Sun on 3DS, and while I totally expect it to just be the same Pokemon we’re used to but with maybe some polished graphics, I think it would be awesome if we saw them take better advantage of the system’s power and give us something like a more “open world” Pokemon game. Sort of like if Breath of the Wild and Pokemon had a baby.

Edited to add: Which isn’t to say I’m expecting the gameplay to change drastically, but I’d like to have a more immersive world that isn’t locked to some isometric perspective, one where I can look around and poke my nose in places it’s not supposed to be and maybe even have like… open world battles where you don’t go to some magic pocket dimension but instead battle right there in the area live. I’m not expecting to be able to climb on things but maybe being able to jump would be nice 😛

I would love to see the formula reinvented, of course. But I honestly don’t know what the heck I’m expecting anyway. Not putting too much stock in that screenshot.

If people really think that was a leaked screen, people are really dumb and gullible. As far as expectations, people are expecting Pokemon to be Xenoblade or Breath of the Wild and that is probably an unrealistic expectation. I think it will just be a very good looking style similar to what exist now. People should be hoping for more gameplay changes than Gamefreak going from 0 (current Pokemon) to 100 (BotW)
